Move Into Home Buying Season
It’s almost the season of backyard barbeques and front yard for-sale signs. If 2019 is the year you’re planning on buying a new home, there are a steps you can take to make sure you’re the most successful buyer you can be in a seller’s market.
1. Get preapproved.
Preapproval is a game changer. A preapproved status gives you more power in your punch as a buyer in a seller’s market. When you’re preapproved, you’ll know for sure what you can afford. So there won’t be any falling in love with houses you’ll never have, or biting off more than you can chew. Just want to ballpark how much home you may be able to afford? We have a calculator for that.
2. Know your non-negotiables and be prepared to move fast.
Have a list ready of things you’re willing to change—like wall color, buying new appliances, or finishing a basement—and things you’re definitely not—like it must have a bedroom level laundry, flat backyard, or be on a quiet street. Coming armed with a list of 5 major home traits that you will not budge on can help you make the decision quickly. If a home misses any mark, you can move on without regret. And if it meets all 5, you can jump on the sale quickly.
3. Be ready to write a letter.
Buying and selling a home is a very emotional process—for both the buyer and the seller. In addition to having the finances and paperwork ready, don’t underestimate the power of being emotionally prepared. Writing a letter to the seller explaining what it is about their house that you’re so in love with could be what puts your offer over the top.
Even if you’ve done it before, buying a home is a big deal and you don’t need to navigate the process alone.
