How the “Take Me Home Program” Supports Special Needs Families

When you're caring for a loved one with special needs, planning for the future goes beyond finances. Helping your loved one stay safe and supported is just as important.

One resource worth knowing about is the Take Me Home Program, a voluntary program offered by participating law enforcement agencies to help first responders assist individuals who may become lost, disoriented or have difficulty communicating.

How does the program work?

The Take Me Home Program allows families and caregivers to register important information about their loved one that law enforcement can access when needed.

Depending on the local program, this may include a photograph, emergency contacts, communication preferences and other details that can help first responders understand an individual's needs.

This information can be especially helpful for individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, communication challenges or other conditions that may make an emergency situation more difficult.

Finding a program near you

Take Me Home and similar programs are available in communities across the country, although participation and enrollment requirements vary by location.

If you live in the Kansas City area, here are two resources to explore:

Outside these areas? Contact your local police department or sheriff's office to learn about programs available in your community.
