5 Ways to Protect Your Online Accounts from Fraud

Fraud and Security, Banking Basics

In a world where our lives are increasingly lived online, protecting your personal information is more important than ever. May 1 marked World Password Day – a timely reminder to take stock of your digital security habits. At CommunityAmerica, we’re committed to helping you keep your accounts safe, not just on one day, but every day.

Here are a few simple but powerful ways to safeguard your online accounts from fraud:

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Avoid reusing the same password across multiple sites. If one account is compromised, others can quickly follow. A strong password should include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters – and avoid easily guessed information like your pet’s name or birthdate.

Tip: Consider using a password manager to keep track of complex logins.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

2FA adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second form of verification, like a text message or authentication app, when logging in. It’s one of the most effective ways to prevent unauthorized access – even if your password is stolen.

3. Watch for Impersonators

Scammers often pretend to be from trusted companies, using emails, texts, or phone calls to trick you into sharing login information or downloading harmful software. It’s important to learn how to spot a fraudulent communication before they reach your wallet. If someone reaches out claiming to be from CommunityAmerica and something feels off, pause and verify. We’ll never ask for your login information.

4. Don’t Share Personal Details

Fraudsters can make messages look like they’re from legitimate sources. Never share sensitive information like your PIN, passwords, or Social Security number through email, text, or over the phone unless you initiated the contact and trust the recipient.

5. Keep Tabs on Your Accounts

Set up transaction alerts and regularly review your account activity. The sooner you catch suspicious behavior, the faster you can act.

Stay in Control of Your Security

Cybercriminals are getting more sophisticated, but the good news is – you have tools at your fingertips to stay ahead of them. Taking a few proactive steps now can protect your finances and your peace of mind – and help you avoid the damaging effects of identity theft.

If you ever suspect fraudulent activity or receive a suspicious message claiming to be from CommunityAmerica, contact us directly through our official channels. We’re here to help you stay safe.
